Every thread has been dyed, woven and treated with care in our Pollença workshop, using the ancestral Mallorcan ikat technique, known on the island as tela de llengües.

That is why caring for them properly is also a way of prolonging their life, their beauty, and their connection with Mallorca.

In this guide, we share some practical advice to help you keep your Vicens fabrics looking as fresh as the day you bought them. We want you to enjoy them, not hide them away in a drawer for fear of using them, while still giving them the attention that every handmade piece deserves.

1. Wash with care

Our fabrics are made primarily of 70% cotton and 30% linen, a natural fibre that is strong yet sensitive to harsh treatments.

MACHINE WASHING

Use delicate programmes (max. 30 ºC).
Choose neutral detergents.
Avoid industrial fabric softeners.
Wash similar colours together.

HAND WASHING
Ideal for small items such as bags, napkins or cushions. Use lukewarm water and soak gently. Do not wring out the fabric when draining: press with your hands and lay flat on a towel.
Stain removers may be used, as well as a small amount of diluted bleach.

2. Air dry, Mallorcan style

Whenever possible, dry your textiles outdoors, protected from direct sunlight to prevent colour loss.

If drying indoors, choose a well-ventilated space.
Do not hang the fabric folded from a single point, as this may cause distortion.
A Mallorcan fabric also appreciates the sun – but always in soft shade.

3. Ironing: yes, but with care

Our fabrics can be ironed without issue, but we recommend:

Adjusting the temperature to cotton or medium-low setting.
Avoiding excessive steam on areas dyed in deep colours.
For napkins, table runners or covers, a good iron highlights the patterns and enhances the fabric’s natural elegance.

4. Store properly, preserve better

When not in use, store your Vicens pieces in a dry, clean place, away from moisture and direct light.

Fold carefully. If the piece is large, such as a tablecloth, change the fold lines from time to time to avoid permanent marks.
Do not use sealed plastic bags: breathable fabric covers are best.
For cushions or covers, store them without the fillers to avoid deformation.

5. Small stains, simple solutions

A glass of wine or a drop of oil? It happens to the best tables. What matters is acting quickly:

Absorb the excess with paper towel (without rubbing).
Wash the stain with lukewarm water and neutral soap.
For difficult stains, consult a trusted dry cleaner familiar with natural, artisan-dyed fabrics.
Remember that our fabrics are not chemically treated, so avoid aggressive products.

6. Special care depending on the product

Cushion covers and upholstery

If removable, follow the washing instructions above.
For intensive use, we recommend applying an ecological anti-stain treatment (ask us for advice).
Vacuum or dry brush regularly to prevent dust build-up.

Tablecloths and runners

Shake off crumbs and clean stains after each use.
Wash regularly in cold water.
If using outdoors, protect from direct sun or rain.

Bags and accessories

Hand wash carefully or clean with a damp cloth.
Do not overload to prevent the fabric from stretching.
Store in fabric bags to preserve shape and colour.

Morning: awakening among markets, coffee and looms

1. Breakfast in a square full of history
Begin in the Plaça Major, the beating heart of Pollença. Here, beneath the gaze of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, village life unfolds. Order a café con leche, an ensaïmada or a small rye bread roll with Mallorcan olive oil. Watch as the town and its people slowly wake up.
On Sunday mornings, the square transforms into a bustling market: local produce, fresh flowers, wicker baskets, artisanal cheeses… It is the perfect place to wander without intent, yet always leave with your hands full.

Just a short walk from our workshop lies this former convent, now a cultural hub. Its Renaissance cloister invites silence and often hosts exhibitions and concerts, especially in summer.
Beside it, a small garden of native plants is the perfect spot to pause and breathe deeply. Time feels as if it stops here.

4. Lunch with local flavour
Pollença offers simple yet delicious cuisine. Look for a family-run restaurant or a quiet terrace to try traditional dishes such as tumbet, frit mallorquí or a fresh salad straight from the garden.

History and technique of a living tradition

In the gentle hum of an old loom, among skeins of threads patiently dyed with pigments that seem born from the Mallorcan landscape, lies a story that is not only told, but woven. Ikat is an ancient textile technique, an art that has travelled across continents and centuries to find its voice – with a distinctive accent – in the soul of Mallorca.
At Teixits Vicens, we have been keeping Ikat alive for over 100 years, making it our greatest legacy. And today we’d like to invite you to discover what makes Ikat more than just a fabric: a living tradition that still stirs emotions.

The origin of a word and a culture

“Ikat” comes from the Malay-Indonesian word mengikat, meaning “to tie, to bind, to fasten”. And that is precisely the foundation of this ancestral technique: tying the threads before dyeing them so that the dye does not reach certain areas. Once woven, the threads reveal a design full of nuances, with vibrant contours that seem to move.
Although Ikat developed independently in different parts of the world — India, Japan, Peru, Uzbekistan or Indonesia — in each place it took on a unique form, adapted to its materials, colours and culture. In Mallorca, Ikat found its voice in the Tela de llengües, named after its characteristic elongated motifs, reminiscent of flames or tongues.

A handcrafted process that defies time

The Ikat technique is, above all, a declaration of love for time and detail. At Teixits Vicens, we continue to preserve the traditional process, which consists of several stages:

Designing and planning the pattern, first drawn on graph paper.
Marking and tying the warp threads, covering them with knots of rope or rubber to protect certain areas from the dye.
Resist dyeing, repeated several times if different colours are desired.
Mounting on the loom, once the threads have been washed, dried and combed.
Hand weaving, where the design emerges as if by magic: it is not painted, it is not printed – it is born from the thread itself.
The result is never perfect. And therein lies its beauty. Subtle variations, delicate “blurs”, the human hand – all of these make every metre of Ikat unique and unrepeatable.
