What to Do in Mallorca: Connect with Its Roots by Visiting the Teixits Vicens Workshop

Mallorca isn’t discovered only from a hammock with your feet in the sand. Those who venture into its villages, workshops and crafts find another island: a Mallorca that beats, that creates, that remembers who it is through its artisanship.
If you’re looking for something different to do in Mallorca, here’s a unique proposal: explore its living heritage through its traditional crafts. From the looms of Pollença to the centuries-old glass furnaces in Algaida, these experiences will help you uncover the island’s soul.

Teixits Vicens (Pollença): Where Roots Are Woven

A visit to the Teixits Vicens workshop is a must for lovers of design, history and authenticity. Here, the Mallorcan llengües fabric continues to be produced much as it was over 160 years ago, using manual looms and techniques passed down through generations.

During your visit:
• You’ll learn about the entire artisanal process, from thread to finished product.
• You’ll discover the cultural meanings behind the patterns.
• You’ll be able to browse the factory shop, filled with unique, sustainable and soulful items.

Other Essential Visits to Discover Artisan Mallorca

Gordiola – Hand-blown Glass Since 1719 (Algaida)

One of the oldest glass workshops in Europe. Here you can watch master glassblowers working live with fire. The factory’s museum also houses historical pieces of immense value.

La Fiore (S’Esgleieta)

Another key reference for hand-blown glass in Mallorca. Their colourful, modern designs are still crafted using traditional techniques. Watching a piece take shape from scratch is a mesmerising experience.

Ceràmica de Pòrtol (Pòrtol and Marratxí)

Clay is living history in Mallorca. Pòrtol and Marratxí are pottery towns where you can still watch craftsmen hand-moulding traditional pieces such as greixoneres or siurells, the charming white figurines decorated with red and green brushstrokes.

Tony Mora – Handmade Boots (Alaró)

An international brand born in the heart of Mallorca. Their handmade leather boots are synonymous with quality, tradition and design. A visit to the showroom and workshop reveals the entire process, from the selection of hides to the final stitching—an opportunity to see how a 100% Mallorcan product is crafted and exported worldwide.

Majorica Pearls (Manacor)

An essential classic. Since 1890, Majorica has been producing organic pearls using a unique method. The factory tour showcases the brand’s storied history, the pearl-making process, and of course the chance to purchase iconic pieces. Ideal for anyone seeking an elegant and lasting memento.

Suau Brandy – Distillery (Marratxí)

One of Spain’s most elegant brandies. Visit their centuries-old cellars and discover the secrets of the solera ageing system.

Oli Solivellas (Es Capdellà / Alcúdia)

Producers of some of Mallorca’s most renowned olive oils. On their estate you can walk through the olive groves, learn about local varieties and discover how exceptional, high-quality oil is made.

Flor de Sal de Santanyí (Es Trenc – Ses Salines)

A magical place where the sea becomes salt. During the visit you can stroll through the salt flats and learn how flor de sal is harvested by hand using traditional methods.

Craftsmanship: The Thread Connecting Past and Present

Craftsmanship is more than a trade: it’s a way of thinking, of living, and of passing on an identity. Learning how a fabric, a clay pot or a hand-blown glass vessel is made offers a glimpse into the intimate history of an island.
In an increasingly fast and digital world, these visits encourage us to slow down, observe and reconnect with what is real. And in Mallorca, that is still possible.

Ca S’alou: a house woven between sky, stone and light

In the midst of the Mediterranean’s quiet pause, where the landscape whispers in rock, pine and horizon, stands Ca S’alou—a house conceived to dissolve into its surroundings rather than impose itself upon them. In this delicate and poetic intervention, the Munarq studio has succeeded in creating atmospheres imbued with serenity that transport us to the most authentic Mediterranean.

Located on a hillside in the interior of Mallorca, Ca S’Alou is the result of an approach that turns discretion into virtue, integrating the home within its natural setting without resorting to artifice. The project does not seek to stand out, but to blend with the terrain, recovering the essence of traditional architecture through a contemporary lens.

Materiality with memory

The starting point was the land itself. The earth excavated during the building process was reused to form the walls, achieving a material continuity that reinforces the feeling that the house emerges from the ground itself. This gesture—simple yet powerful—defines the spirit of the project: an architecture born of the place and destined to return to it.

Nothing is disguised; everything reveals its true nature. There is no pretence or imitation here. This honesty in materiality becomes an ally of light, which modulates the interiors with soft nuances, creating half-shadows, reflections and textures.

From Teixits Vicens, we travelled there to carry out a photoshoot showcasing how our fabrics adapt naturally to any environment. We dressed the house with different textiles: cushions, tablecloths, runners, lampshades and details capable of making a difference while integrating into the whole. Our challenge was to ensure that these elements did not compete for attention or disrupt the harmony. We wanted them to take part—discreetly—in that contemplative atmosphere, shaping the space without imposing themselves.

We opted for natural materials and tones that could bring the sea into a home filled with earthy hues. Each piece was tailor-made.

Atmospheres that soften scale

Formally, the dwelling is organised into two symmetrical volumes—a reinterpretation of the old sestadors of Mallorca, those rural structures once linked to shepherding. Munarq translates their elemental geometry into a contemporary language, replacing nostalgia with serene, timeless sobriety.

The choice of materials follows the logic of durability and aesthetic coherence: local stone, lime, wood and natural finishes that evolve over time. The aim is not to preserve the look of the new, but to allow the architecture to age gracefully, adapting to the landscape and acquiring its own patina.

The house unfolds on a single level, following the slope of the land and preserving a domestic scale. From the street, its volume is barely perceptible; yet, as one descends inside, it opens onto the horizon with wide, carefully framed views. The interiors maintain a constant dialogue with the exterior, seeking visual and luminous continuity that blurs the boundaries between both.

Ca S’Alou embodies Munarq’s philosophy: to build with moderation, with respect for the place and the material history of the island. It is a work that demonstrates that contemporaneity does not depend on gesture, but on the ability to listen to the territory and respond to it with sensitivity and rigour.

The experience of inhabiting Ca S’Alou

Entering this house feels like being embraced by stone and light. There is a calm rhythm to it.

Textiles play an essential role in this lived experience: a curtain that filters the light or a lattice that grants privacy without suffocating it. Through them, certain intimate spaces become havens of calm, while the social areas open gently towards the landscape.

With our photoshoot, our aim was not to intervene but to accompany—to create without taking away, to contribute without distracting. A house that does not steal the limelight from its surroundings but becomes part of them.

It is in that humility—when the object steps into the background and the space breathes—that authenticity is born. That, we believe, is the finest legacy for the Mediterranean, to which its walls, its shadows and its silences owe so much.

Guide to Caring for Your Teixits Vicens

Practical tips to preserve the beauty of our handcrafted textiles

When you choose a fabric from Teixits Vicens, you are not simply acquiring a textile product. You are bringing home a piece of Mallorcan history, tradition and craftsmanship. Every thread has been dyed, woven and treated with care in our Pollença workshop, using the ancestral Mallorcan ikat technique, known on the island as tela de llengües.

That is why caring for them properly is also a way of prolonging their life, their beauty, and their connection with Mallorca.

In this guide, we share some practical advice to help you keep your Vicens fabrics looking as fresh as the day you bought them. We want you to enjoy them, not hide them away in a drawer for fear of using them, while still giving them the attention that every handmade piece deserves.

1. Wash with care

Our fabrics are made primarily of 70% cotton and 30% linen, a natural fibre that is strong yet sensitive to harsh treatments.

MACHINE WASHING

  • Use delicate programmes (max. 30 ºC).
  • Choose neutral detergents.
  • Avoid industrial fabric softeners.
  • Wash similar colours together.

HAND WASHING
Ideal for small items such as bags, napkins or cushions. Use lukewarm water and soak gently. Do not wring out the fabric when draining: press with your hands and lay flat on a towel.
Stain removers may be used, as well as a small amount of diluted bleach.

2. Air dry, Mallorcan style

Whenever possible, dry your textiles outdoors, protected from direct sunlight to prevent colour loss.

  • If drying indoors, choose a well-ventilated space.
  • Do not hang the fabric folded from a single point, as this may cause distortion.
A Mallorcan fabric also appreciates the sun – but always in soft shade.

3. Ironing: yes, but with care

Our fabrics can be ironed without issue, but we recommend:

  • Adjusting the temperature to cotton or medium-low setting.
  • Avoiding excessive steam on areas dyed in deep colours.
For napkins, table runners or covers, a good iron highlights the patterns and enhances the fabric’s natural elegance.

4. Store properly, preserve better

When not in use, store your Vicens pieces in a dry, clean place, away from moisture and direct light.

  • Fold carefully. If the piece is large, such as a tablecloth, change the fold lines from time to time to avoid permanent marks.
  • Do not use sealed plastic bags: breathable fabric covers are best.
  • For cushions or covers, store them without the fillers to avoid deformation.

5. Small stains, simple solutions

A glass of wine or a drop of oil? It happens to the best tables. What matters is acting quickly:

  • Absorb the excess with paper towel (without rubbing).
  • Wash the stain with lukewarm water and neutral soap.
  • For difficult stains, consult a trusted dry cleaner familiar with natural, artisan-dyed fabrics.
Remember that our fabrics are not chemically treated, so avoid aggressive products.

6. Special care depending on the product

Cushion covers and upholstery

  • If removable, follow the washing instructions above.
  • For intensive use, we recommend applying an ecological anti-stain treatment (ask us for advice).
  • Vacuum or dry brush regularly to prevent dust build-up.

Tablecloths and runners

  • Shake off crumbs and clean stains after each use.
  • Wash regularly in cold water.
  • If using outdoors, protect from direct sun or rain.

Bags and accessories

  • Hand wash carefully or clean with a damp cloth.
  • Do not overload to prevent the fabric from stretching.
  • Store in fabric bags to preserve shape and colour.

Craftsmanship that lasts a lifetime (if cared for well)

Teixits Vicens fabrics are designed to accompany you in everyday life: at family meals, summer gatherings, and shared spaces. And with just a little attention, they will be with you for many years.

By caring for what has been handmade, you are not only protecting an object, but also a way of understanding the world: slower, more respectful, more authentic.

Thank you for being part of this story, thread by thread.

A Slow Route through Pollença

A guide to discovering the town through an artisanal and unhurried lens

In a corner of northern Mallorca, where the mountains brush against the sea and cobbled streets whisper tales of centuries past, lies Pollença – one of the island’s most soulful towns. Wandering here without hurry is a gift. Experiencing it slowly is a true delight.

At Teixits Vicens, we have been part of this story for over 160 years. That is why today we’d like to invite you to discover Pollença at a slower pace, one that values the authentic, the handmade, and the things that can only be savoured step by step.

Get ready to walk without a map. This is a route designed to let your senses guide you.

Morning: awakening among markets, coffee and looms

1. Breakfast in a square full of history
Begin in the Plaça Major, the beating heart of Pollença. Here, beneath the gaze of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, village life unfolds. Order a café con leche, an ensaïmada or a small rye bread roll with Mallorcan olive oil. Watch as the town and its people slowly wake up.
On Sunday mornings, the square transforms into a bustling market: local produce, fresh flowers, wicker baskets, artisanal cheeses… It is the perfect place to wander without intent, yet always leave with your hands full.

2. Visit to Teixits Vicens
At Teixits Vicens, our doors are open not just to showcase our products but to share a tradition. Here we continue to handweave the famous telas de llengües, using the ancestral Mallorcan ikat technique.
You can explore the workshop, see the looms in action, touch the fibres, discover the process step by step, and meet the artisans themselves. It’s not just a visit – it’s a window into the textile soul of Mallorca.

Midday: art, nature and food taken slowly

3. Claustre de Sant Domingo and its hidden garden
Just a short walk from our workshop lies this former convent, now a cultural hub. Its Renaissance cloister invites silence and often hosts exhibitions and concerts, especially in summer.
Beside it, a small garden of native plants is the perfect spot to pause and breathe deeply. Time feels as if it stops here.

4. Lunch with local flavour
Pollença offers simple yet delicious cuisine. Look for a family-run restaurant or a quiet terrace to try traditional dishes such as tumbet, frit mallorquí or a fresh salad straight from the garden.
Pair your meal with a Mallorcan wine or a glass of vi de la terra, and if you can, finish with gató almond cake served with almond ice cream – Mallorca on a spoon.

Afternoon: strolls, steps and horizons

5. Calvari: 365 steps towards calm
After lunch, climb the 365 steps of the Calvari, the famous stairway leading to a small chapel with spectacular views over the town and valley. Each step is a pause, a photograph, an inspiration.
At the top, the silence and the landscape will remind you why you came – and why you’ll return.

6. Shops with soul
On your way back down, wander through the artisan shops, art galleries and local workshops. Pollença is home to ceramists, painters, designers and jewellers who work with passion. Here, every object has a story, every purchase a face.

Evening: dinner under the stars

7. Dinner by lantern light
When night falls, Pollença glows with another kind of light. Terraces come alive, alleyways murmur. Choose a quiet corner for dining al fresco. Here, luxury lies not in sophistication but in well-crafted simplicity.
A good conversation, a glass of local wine, and a table dressed with a fabric you may already recognise: perhaps a llengua from Teixits Vicens, gracing the tablecloth of a dinner you won’t forget.

Experiencing Pollença slowly

Taking a slow route through Pollença is not just about seeing places – it’s about connecting with them. Feeling the town’s gentle rhythm, speaking with its people, looking with fresh eyes. And understanding that the most valuable things are not bought in haste, but discovered step by step.

At Teixits Vicens, we believe in this Mallorca that is tranquil, authentic and full of soul. And we are here, in every thread, to remind you of it.
