Until next February 19, the “Sala Atrio” de Barcelona will host an exhibition by third and fourth year students of the Degree in Design and the Degree in Industrial Design Engineering, in collaboration with Teixits Vicens.

In the exhibition you can see from a pouf to an “ensaimada”, passing through several handbags, all made with clothes from Teixits Vicens. The objective of the subject “Experimentation and Product” was to propose a contemporary and experimental approach to a traditional project. From here, the students, tutored by Martín Azúa, Raquel Llaberia, David Bota and Tomás López, have developed projects addressing three perspectives: the material, the technique and the narrative based mainly on the territory, the style of life and history of the island of Mallorca.

On the occasion of the reopening of the Made in Mallorca handicraft fair at the Es Baluart Museum in Palma de Mallorca, the AD magazine has published a report by the different participating firms.

The magazine highlights the collection presented by Vicens & Maria Antònia Ramis, “THE MAGIC OF WOOL”. A set of pieces of different sizes that allow you to play with the spaces.

Wool, from the sheep of Mallorca, is a natural fiber that transpires, protects us because it is fire retardant and has the ability to regulate temperature and control humidity, ideal characteristics for the climate of our island.

In this edition the fair promotes the power of what we do at home, the quality of the materials and the value of the original product. Designs that have in common being products thought, created and produced on the island. Strengthen the union between the creator and the producer. For this reason, the collaboration with the artist Maria Antònia Ramis has been an enriching experience. Her artistic sensibility has been perfect to connect with the philosophy of Vicens, a company that since 1854 has been dedicated to weaving crafts fabrics and that has never stopped fighting to preserve our culture.

Antic Mallorca and Teixits Vicens create an original jewelry collection.

The union of two ancient crafts from Mallorca such as the “llata” and the ikat fabrics, shapes this collection of jewels created by Antic Mallorca and Teixits Vicens, which proposes a renewed vision and a different use of the materials of both crafts .

Bracelets, pendants, chokers and belts of palm leaves with touches of Mediterranean blue, turquoise, purple and ecru colors, in the shape of “llengües” deconstructed to its minimum expression, cotton threads.

The result is an original, fresh, happy, natural and positive jewelry collection that after the long period of confinement invites you to go out, enjoy summer in the Mediterranean, on our nice island, and to be aware of the small treasures and the importance to keep holding them.

Its owners who live between Germany and Mallorca and are good connoisseurs of the Mallorcan genre, decided in 2015 to open a business, in their country of origin, of “delicatessen” products from the Island. Their main objective was to select the highest quality and sustainability ones.

This store is also characterized because all its suppliers are family businesses, where different generations have made history in their artisan factories.

Being such versatile fabric manufacturers gives us the freedom to make different products. Since the confinement began, basically, the Teixits Vicens workshop has been dedicated to the manufacture of Ikat fabric face masks. Such a characteristic fabric on our islands. The starting point to make this product was the lack of sanitary material to carry out the different urgent and necessary tasks in this serious situation. The reception has been very good, both in the field of companies and of our private clients. So, this has encouraged us to start producing children’s face masks for kids of different ages. The masks that we have manufactured at Teixits Vicens are exclusively for a hygienic purpose and use and don’t have to replace an individual protective equipment or a medical device. But it is  useful as a protection tool to prevent droplets from detaching from an infected person. Are made with double Ikat fabric 70% cotton and 30% linen, plus a very thin 100% cotton fabric so that the friction with the skin is softer. The design covers the nose, mouth and chin. In addition, it has two lateral elastic bands so that the mask fits well on the face. The Ikat fabrics are made by hand and are very resistant, so the masks can be washed and reused. At this moment in Teixits Vicens we have closed, but our online store continues to operate 24 hours, preparing orders with all the security guarantees. We need to stay home and comply with the rules is the most important responsibility these days. Despite the concern that this unusual situation produces, and that has us all puzzled, we have to be positive, have calm, common sense and transform it in a productive experience.

Made in Mallorca, the brand that brings together different Mallorcan handicraft companies, is preparing for the second edition on the island.

After participating in the London Design Fair, one of the most important in Europe, since 2017, the challenge is to continue making itself known at home. This time it will be held from March 11 to 14 in Es Baluart. In addition, in this edition the exhibition will have more participants than in the previous fair. The idea is a local designers collaborate with companies that produce fabric, glass, ceramics, lighting, furniture, etc.

The IDI (Business Innovation Institute of the Balearic Islands) seeks recognition of local production. Trades with an identity sign from Mallorca, whose work begins and ends at home. Preserve the essence, reinterpreted under the creative gaze of each designer.
